Interoceanic Train Derails in Mexico, Kills 13, Injures 98

An Interoceanic Train derailment in southern Mexico resulted in at least 15 injuries and disrupted rail traffic. The incident occurred near Nizanda, impacting a key trade route.

At least 13 people were killed, and 98 others were injured after a passenger train derailed in southern Mexico. The accident involved the Interoceanic Train that connects the Pacific and Gulf coasts, in the state of Oaxaca.

According to the Mexican Navy, which operates the rail line, around 250 people were on board the train, including 241 passengers and 9 crew members. Of the injured, 36 were taken to hospital for treatment, while others suffered minor injuries were treated at the scene.

The derailment occurred on the main rail line between Veracruz and Salina Cruz, near the town of Nizanda, as the train was negotiating a curve. Several coaches overturned following the incident.

Rescue operations were launched immediately, with hundreds of naval personnel, ambulances, and emergency vehicles deployed to the site. Soldiers from the Mexican Army and Civil Protection teams worked alongside rescue crews to evacuate passengers and assist the injured.
