New Delhi: Ferrero Group has started producing its iconic Nutella in the US, for the first time in the brand’s history and the global confectionery major has invested $75 million or about Rs 625 crore in the project at Illinois. This would be a milestone development for the brand that has always manufactured Nutella only outside of US borders since 1964, the year it was introduced.

The brand has opened up a new production line at the Illinois-based plant in Franklin Park, near Chicago, which would be used for manufacturing Nutella Peanut-a combination of Nutella’s classic cocoa-hazelnut spread and roasted peanuts. Not only is it the first time that a Nutella product will be manufactured in the US, but the combination is also the first new flavor introduced in the past six decades of the brand’s history.

Ferrero’s Bet, Nutella Plant in progress

The $75 million investment made by Ferrero will be used for modernizing the plant and retooling it, the same plant that currently produces brands like Butterfinger and Baby Ruth, and would generate about 50 jobs and later 65, according to previous estimates. The product Nutella Peanut has been under development for close to five years now and indicates Ferrero’s plan for localizing its products for the American market, where peanuts are an integral part of the food culture. It would be interesting to see if this new variant attracts new customers as much as it retains the old ones.

This comes in as Ferrero has been aggressively expanding its operations in North America and has spent billions of dollars on acquiring businesses and building infrastructure over the last decade, thus building up an immense portfolio of US brands and manufacturing capabilities. The facility at Illinois is a part of Ferrero’s infrastructure that also includes a 70,000 sq ft chocolate processing facility at Bloomington and an R&D center at Chicago.

There are also considerable business benefits to producing the product in the US, for instance-complexities with the supply chain would decrease and costs would reduce. This would also help them respond quickly to demand in what is one of the biggest packaged food markets in the world. Additionally, it has also become politically important in the US to boost domestic manufacturing.

The launch of the new Nutella product would have been considered in due light of the product’s rising popularity; sales have almost doubled globally since 2020. It seems Ferrero intends to take advantage of the product’s global popularity, by innovating a product that has remained almost unchanged in the past decades.
