Mumbai: The world of Apne can never feel complete without Dharmendra, and that emotion is now shaping the future of its long awaited sequel. After the legendary actor’s passing on November 24, director Anil Sharma had initially hinted that Apne 2 might be shelved. However, producer Deepak Mukut has now confirmed that the film is still alive only that it undergoes significant rewriting.
The original script placed Dharmendra in a key role alongside his sons Sunny and Bobby Deol and grandson Karan Deol. Since that is no longer possible, the team has decided to reshape the narrative while keeping his presence alive in spirit.
Dharmendra Was Excited to Return for Apne 2
Deepak Mukut revealed that he had narrated the script to Dharmendra just a few months before his passing. The veteran actor was thrilled at the idea of reuniting with his sons on screen once again and was even more excited to work with his grandson Karan.
Mukut shared, “Dharamji was very excited about the sequel. Making Apne 2 with his children was one of his wishes. We are reworking the script now. The story will be told from the viewpoint of Sunny and Bobby’s characters. There will be changes as Dharamji is no more, and we will miss him dearly. We are also working on finding a respectful way to incorporate his character.”
The movie, he said, will now be a “shraddhanjali” to the beloved star. “If I cannot make the movie with Dharamji, I can at least honour him through it. Apne 2 will be made and it will be a tribute to him.”
What the New Story Will Focus On
Although Apne 2 cannot be the same without Dharmendra, the soul will be the same. The sequel will continue the story from where the original left off, with a new generation stepping in.
Mukut confirmed that Karan Deol will be introduced as the son of Angad Singh Choudhary, the character played by Sunny Deol in the first film. The film will carry forward the themes of family, dreams, sportsmanship and emotional struggle that defined Apne.
Why Did Director Anil Sharma Announce That the Film Was Shelved?
Shortly after Dharmendra’s death, Anil Sharma reportedly said in a media interaction that Apne 2 would not be made anymore. However, when asked about this, Deepak Mukut expressed surprise.
“I do not know why Anil said it. When I asked him, he flatly denied making any such statement,” Mukut said. He also confirmed that the project has never stopped and the rewriting process is actively underway.
A Look Back at Apne (2007)
Before moving to the sequel, it is important to recall what made Apne such a special film for fans of the Deol family. Released in 2007, Apne was a powerful emotional family drama centred around boxing. Dharmendra played Baldev Singh Choudhary, a once celebrated boxer who lost his reputation after being framed in a doping scandal. With a broken heart but an unbroken spirit, he hoped to restore his honour through his sons.
Sunny Deol’s character, Angad, initially refuses to box due to past injuries, while Bobby Deol’s character, Karan, attempts to fulfil his father’s dream despite facing his own limitations. The film explored themes of redemption, sacrifice, the bond between parents and children, and the unshakeable strength of family. Apne resonated deeply with audiences because it brought together the real life bond of Dharmendra and his sons and wrapped it in an emotional, sports driven narrative.
Its music, emotional depth and powerful performances made it one of the most memorable family dramas of the 2000s. This is why Apne 2 carries such emotional weight even today.
A Tribute That Hopes to Keep Dharmendra’s Legacy Alive
Apne 2 now carries a much deeper purpose. It is no longer just a sequel, but a cinematic farewell and tribute to one of Indian cinema’s most loved icons. Though he is no longer present to lead the story, Dharmendra’s spirit remains the driving force behind this film.
