Washington, November 19: During a high-stakes meeting at the White House between US President Donald Trump and Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, several important statements were made regarding defense, nuclear technology, investment, and Israel-Saudi relations. Trump gave bin Salman, who arrived at the White House after seven years, a grand welcome with military honors, cannon salute, and jet flyover.
During the meeting, Trump indicated that America is considering an agreement to transfer nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia. He said he could “see a deal happening,” though he did not specify a timeline. The two leaders also discussed the Abraham Accords. Trump claimed he received a “positive response” from Saudi Arabia, while bin Salman said Saudi Arabia wants to join the agreements but also wants a guarantee of a clear path to a two-state solution.
Trump announced that America is working toward approving the sale of F-35 stealth fighter jets to Saudi Arabia. He said the arrangement would be “just like Israel’s.” If this deal goes through, it will be considered a major shift in the Middle East power equation.
Additionally, Trump stated that a defense cooperation agreement between the US and Saudi Arabia has been finalized. He also said the US administration is working on approving the sale of advanced AI chips—signaling a major change in US export policy and giving a new direction to technological cooperation between the two countries.
There was also a major announcement on the investment front. Trump said Saudi Arabia has agreed to invest $600 billion in the US economy. He said in a joking manner that he hopes “they’ll increase it to a trillion dollars.” In response, bin Salman said Saudi Arabia “believes in America’s future” and will increase investment to approximately $1 trillion.
When journalists asked Trump about his family’s business and potential conflicts of interest, Trump said, “I have nothing to do with my family’s business. I’m giving 100% energy to the presidency.”
When asked about Jamal Khashoggi’s murder, Trump claimed contrary to US intelligence conclusions that bin Salman “knew nothing about it.” He said, “Whether one likes that person (Khashoggi) or not, things happen.”
This meeting at the White House took place at a time when the Trump administration is trying to take strategic, defense, and economic partnership with Saudi Arabia to a new level.
