New Delhi: The Tata Trusts have been recognized to have a great presence of philanthropy and good governance principles. One of their oldest and most respected trusts, the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT), just underwent a significant transformation. Others that will have a fixed term of three years are industrialist Venu Srinivasan who previously has been granted a life appointment as Vice-Chairman and Trustee.

This occurred due to new regulations by the government of Maharashtra on charitable trusts of the people. The new law provided that the number of trustees in a public trust (out of the total number) at no more than a quarter of the trustees may serve life. The fact that there are seven trustees in the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust implies that one of these trustees can only remain a permanent trustee. The rule became effective since September 2025 and it was necessary to act within the law and what remained was to amend its previous decisions.
In preparation of this, the Trust had in October 2024 passed a resolution that enabled some trustees, among them Venu Srinivasan, to be appointed on a life basis. However, with the new law, this decision was eliminated. The board again met and ruled to replace Srinivasan to be within the rule. He will now serve as the Vice-Chairman and Trustee with a term beginning in November 2025 and a term of three years.
The Trust added that such an action was taken to comply with all legal and regulatory demands. It proves that even large and well-established organizations must observe the same rules as all other people. It also indicates how the governance in charitable trusts is becoming more open and organized over time.
Who is Venu Srinivasan?
Venu Srinivasan is a famous business person who is most famed in his position in TVS Motor Company. He is a long time associate of Tata group and has donated to various programs through its philanthropic departments. Even his reappointment albeit in tutory capacity, demonstrates the confidence and esteem that he still receives among the trustees.
It is also a significant transformation that will alter the manner of work in the Tata Trusts under the next years. A significant portion of these trusts is significant shares in Tata Sons, the central holding company of the whole Tata Group. That is to say that their internal decisions and management styles can contribute significantly to the functioning of the bigger Tata ecosystem. The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust has been leading by example of responsible governance by revamping its structure on the basis of the law.
The board of the trust has been working on the consolidation of the internal policies in the last few months. It has been discussed on how to make sure it is fair and compliant and still preserve the initial spirit of the trust. It was also reported that Venu Srinivasan had previously halted any new inductions to the trust so as to prevent a mix up during this transitional phase of the law. This cautious step indicates the seriousness of the leadership on its duties.
The trust, established in 1932, has been funding most of the social causes in education, healthcare, rural development and scientific research. It has remained in line with the original vision of Jamsetji Tata of giving back to the society. Throughout the decades, there have been a number of renowned industrialists and philanthropists who have been trustees so that the money is spent on worthy causes.

It is through this new development that the trust has demonstrated that adherence to rules does not weaken it. Rather it provides additional transparency and equality of decision making. It also opens space to new individuals and new ideas in the future by putting an end to lifetime appointments and putting the straight terms straight.
Simply put the reappointment of Venu Srinivasan to a set term of three years is not only a legal measure, it is also an indication of maturity. It informs us that even the most enormous and ancient organizations should continue to change over the course of time. With their tradition of sincerity and service, the Tata Trusts have now again shown that a good leader should respect tradition and the law.
This revamp would keep the activities of the trust robust, transparent and in tandem with the current governance principles. With the start of the new term, the priorities will still be to further the good work of the Trust to society, just as it has been doing it in over 90 years.
