WASHINGTON: In a sensational claim U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally assured him that India will stop purchasing crude oil from Russia. Speaking to reporters during a press conference at the White House in Washington, Trump in his characteristic style, called PM Modi his “friend” and a “great man” while also adding a peculiar remark that he did not want to “end his political career.” The statement has created a diplomatic stir worldwide especially in New Delhi and Moscow placing India in a difficult position.

This statement was captured in a video where Trump was speaking on relations with India.

I was not happy that India was buying oil from Russia… and he has assured me today that they will not be buying oil from Russia. That’s a big step” Trump said.

He also acknowledged that this change would not be immediate.

You know it can’t be done immediately. It’s a little bit of a process but that process is going to be over with soon.”

Modi Loves Trump”

During his statement, Trump emphasized his personal relationship with PM Modi.

Modi is a great man. He loves Trump”

he said. He then laughingly clarified

Now I don’t want you to take the word ‘love’ any other way. I don’t want to end his political career.”

By linking this personal commentary with a serious geopolitical issue like oil imports, Trump once again displayed his unconventional diplomatic style.

A Diplomatic Challenge for India

Trump’s claim has emerged as a major challenge for India. Since the war in Ukraine began, India along with China has been the largest buyer of discounted Russian oil which has helped the country manage rising energy prices.

However, the Government of India has not yet officially confirmed Trump’s claim. The Ministry of External Affairs has given a measured response, stating that India’s energy policy is determined by the interests of its consumers and the security of its energy supply.

Trump’s statement comes at a time when the U.S. has imposed heavy tariffs on India regarding the purchase of Russian oil and an Indian trade delegation is in Washington for talks on these very issues. The world’s eyes are now on India’s next move as it navigates a balance between its long-standing ally Russia and its key strategic partner, the United States.
