India and China Resume Direct Flights After Five Years, Marking a Step Toward Normalised Ties

After years of suspension due to the pandemic and border tensions, IndiGo and China Eastern Airlines will reconnect major cities, signalling a cautious thaw in bilateral relations.

Delhi, 26 October (H.S.): After a suspension lasting five years, direct flight services between India and China are set to resume on Sunday. The resumption was delayed for years due to border tensions following the initial suspension during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.The first flight, operated by Indian airline IndiGo, will depart from Kolkata for Guangzhou today.

The airline also plans to start a Delhi-Guangzhou service on November 10. Chinese carrier China Eastern will re-establish its Shanghai-Delhi route starting November 9.The decision to restore air connectivity followed discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin on August 31.

Following this high-level meeting, India formally announced on October 2 that flights would recommence.Beijing has expressed a positive outlook on the resumption, stating it is prepared to handle bilateral relations from a strategic, long-term perspective to foster stable development and benefit both nations.
