Bangladesh Unrest: Hindu Journalist Shot Dead by Miscreants, Fifth in 3 Weeks

The incident has intensified concerns about rising insecurity ahead of national elections, even as the Yunus-led interim government dismisses the cases as ordinary crimes.

Following the violent outbreak against Hindus in Bangladesh, another man was shot dead in the country. The deceased have been identified as Rana Pratap. The incident took place around 5:45 pm at Kopalia Bazar in Ward No. 17 of Manirampur upazila. This is the fifth fatal attack on the members of Bangladesh’s Hindu community who have been killed in separate violent incidents over the past three weeks, raising serious concerns over law and order amid continuing unrest and protests across the country.

Rana Pratap was a Hindu journalist

Journalist and Blitz editor Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury said the victim has been identified as Rana Pratap Bairagi. He was reportedly shot by unidentified assailants around noon in Monirampur upazila of Jessore district.

The exact circumstances of the murder are still unclear. Police have not yet made any arrests or commented on a possible motive. The incident adds to growing concern over recent attacks targeting members of the Hindu community.

Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge Rajiullah Khan said, “ We are at the scene. Preparations are underway to recover the body and conduct a post-mortem examination.”

An investigation has been initiated to identify and arrest the attackers.

This killing marks the fifth such violent incident in the past three weeks in Bangladesh amid ongoing protests and heightened tensions in several parts of the country.

Hindu Businessman Killed on December 31

On December 31, a mob attacked Hindu businessman Khokan Das in Shariatpur district while he was returning home after closing his medical shop. He was stabbed, beaten, and later set on fire. He died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Police say the investigation is ongoing, but no one has yet been held responsible.

Dipu Das Lynched by a Mob

In another case, 27-year-old Dipu Chandra Das, who worked at a garment factory in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, was beaten to death. Reports say that on the night of December 18, he was accused of making disrespectful remarks about Islam during a factory program. Soon afterward, a large mob attacked him, tied him to a tree, and set his body on fire.
