Delhi, January 26: The European union and India are about to close deals on defence cooperation, including high chances of India involving in selected European defence initiatives according to a draft security and defence partnership document, reported by Reuters.

The upcoming partnership Europe wants to cut its strategic dependence on US and Chile while making stronger diplomatic and economic ties with other countries. Under the document, EU and India will discuss on their respective defence initiatives, with specific exchanges on defence industry-related matters.

The draft highlights that both will assess, where security priorities align, and opportunities for India’s participation in relevant defence initiatives, subject to their legal framework. It also mentions plans for annual meets between both for security and defence dialogue, cooperation in maritime security, cybersecurity, and counterterrorism

The document also states rising geopolitical tensions, increasingly complex security threats, and rapid tech change, the draft underscores the need for deeper EU–India engagement in security and defence. The announcement is expected to coincide with the conclusion of long-running negotiations for an EU–India free trade agreement, scheduled to be unveiled on Tuesday.
