Washington, January 22: On the first day of Trump presidency in 2025, he declared quitting the WHO and gave 1 year notice to the health organization. As of 2026, this notice comes to an end and US is officially leaving the WHO. The country is obligated to contribute $260 million in assessed dues to the organization.
Washington accounted for 18% to the overall funding of World Health Organization. Due to this shortage the organization had to make budget cuts and layoffs. America was the biggest financer to the establishment because of its absence ¼ of the people working will be dismissed by the middle of the year. One of the US administrative spokesperson stated the reason the country is leaving the confederation, being WHO’s negligence to manage and share information. Consequently, costing US trillions of dollars. The US president has ordered to stop all future transfers of money, support and even resources to the organization.
Bill Gates also commented as he chairs the Gates Foundation and has contributed to many of WHOs projects, said that “US quitting the WHO was unexpected and to also rethink the decision” he also added that he will speak up for the cause if he has an opportunity as the world needs the WHO.
Over the last year many experts tried to convince the influential country to reconsider its decision. The director of WHO, General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed that losing US’s support would be a huge loss for the organization as well as the world.
