9 People Dead, 10 Injured in Mass Shooting in Johannesburg

9 people are reported dead and almost 10 injured in the mass shooting that took place at a township Bekkersdal township of Johannesburg, South Africa, Reuters reported, citing the local police on Sunday.

According to the same repost, the local authorities have started a manhunt for the suspects involved in the incident.

The incident had occurred at around 1 am (local time) in a bar, the statement released by the local police claimed.

Details of the mass shooting

According to media sources, 12 unnamed suspects in a white minivan and a silver sedan were part of this incident, escaping from the scene immediately afterwards. The reason behind this attack has not yet been revealed, for which an investigation has been underway.

The wounded have been ferried to nearby clinics. Bekkersdal comprises part of the Rand West City local municipality, which on its website has defined the township to be a region marked by high unemployment and poverty induced by a downturn in the gold mining industry.

Currently, the country with the largest economy in Africa, South Africa, has the world’s second-highest murder rate per capita, with an average of 60 murders per day.

Police say attackers took valuables from the dead victims

The police also claimed, the attackers also robbed the victims after killing them. This claim was made by Gauteng Deputy Provincial Police Commissioner Major-General Fred Kekana.

He said three people were killed inside the bar, while others were shot as they tried to flee, with the gunmen continuing to fire as they left the scene.
