December-Like Chill Grips Himachal Pradesh Ahead of Winter

Himachal Pradesh is experiencing unusually harsh mid-November conditions as temperatures plunge below freezing in Lahaul-Spiti and several plains districts turn colder than Shimla, while the Met Department predicts dry weather and further night-time cooling ahead.

Shimla, November 14: Himachal Pradesh is witnessing a December-January like weather in mid November, especially in the tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti, intense frost is affecting daily life. The temperature in Keylong, Kukumsari and Tabo has dropped down to minus due to which the water sources have started freezing. In many high altitude areas the water is now freezing and the cold-wave is steadily growing.

In Keylong last night the minimum temperature fell to –3.6 °C, while Kukumsari recorded –4.1 °C, and Tabo plunged to –5.3 °C making it the coldest spot here. In the capital city Shimla the temperature was recorded at 8.4 °C, but surprisingly many towns on the plains were colder than Shimla. In Hamirpur it was 5.3 °C, much lower than Shimla. In Sundernagar it was 4.6 °C, in Bhuntar 2.8 °C, and in Solan 3.2 °C. Other places: Palampur 5.5 °C, Sarahan 5.5 °C, Bajwara 4.4 °C.

Locals say that in the last few days the weather has rapidly changed and the nights have become extremely cold.

The tourist town of Manali recorded 1.9 °C, where the early morning cold breeze left people trembling. In Kangra it was 7.4 °C, in Mandi 6.2 °C, in Bilaspur 8 °C, in Dharamsala 8.4 °C. In Una it was 8.5 °C, in Jubbarhatti 8.6 °C, in Kasauli 9.8 °C, in Barmour 6.3 °C and in Paonta Sahib 12 °C. In Narkanda it was 3.8 °C, in Rekong Pio 3.3 °C, in Chowbagh 1.8 °C and in Dehra Gopipur 8 °C. In Neri it was 11 °C and in Barthin 6.2 °C.

Meanwhile, across the state the weather remained dry on Friday. The Meteorological Centre has clarified there is no possibility of rain or snowfall in Himachal Pradesh until at least 20 November. With clear skies prevailing, the arrival of cold winds is likely to have further effect in the coming days, and night‐time temperatures may fall further.
