Mumbai: The upcoming action thriller Dhurandhar, starring Ranveer Singh, has been the centre of a legal controversy after the parents of Ashoka Chakra awardee Late Major Mohit Sharma approached the Delhi High Court. They wanted the film to be halted on grounds it was being screened as a true life story and supposedly was similar to the life of the renowned Army officer.

Following the petition, the Delhi High Court directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to carefully examine these concerns before completing certification. Now, the Board has submitted its fresh response, making it clear that the film has no connection to Major Sharma’s life, service or experiences.

Court Asked For Clarity On The Alleged Similarities

During the hearing, Justice Sachin Datta questioned the petitioners’ counsel on how the claim of resemblance was being established. The Court noted that only the trailer was publicly available and no material showing clear or uncanny similarity had been presented.

The Court had also stated that the CBFC could consult the Indian Army if needed. However, this step was left to the Board’s discretion and depended on whether the film showed military operations or characters based on real Army personnel.

CBFC Conducts Fresh Review After Court Direction

In compliance with the Court’s order dated December 1, 2025, the CBFC re-examined the film.
The Board’s latest communication states:

  • Dhurandhar does not depict Major Mohit Sharma in any direct or indirect way.
  • The movie is not a reflection of a real mission or a military operation.
  • It is a work of fiction, and has no biographical or factual inspiration from the officer.
  • An explicit disclaimer is already included in the film, stating that all events and characters are fictional.

The Board also mentioned that the Examining Committee had already watched Dhurandhar on November 28, 2025, and approved it for Adult certification with certain modifications. The fresh review found no reason to change that conclusion.

No Need For Army Consultation, Says CBFC

While the Delhi High Court noted that the CBFC could refer the film to the Army if it depicted real operations, the Board decided such consultation was unnecessary.
Dhurandhar does not depict a real life officer, nor does he depict a real life mission, which is why expert input from the Army was considered irrelevant.

Petitioners Claimed Violation Of Rights And Legacy

Major Mohit Sharma’s parents argued that the film was being promoted as inspired by true events. They believed the storyline echoed elements of the officer’s bravery, persona and sacrifice.

They also raised concerns about:

  • violation of posthumous privacy
  • improper representation of a national hero
  • depiction of sensitive Special Forces operations
  • However, no concrete evidence of resemblance was presented before the Court.

Filmmakers Maintain Dhurandhar Is Pure Fiction

The filmmakers, represented by Senior Advocate Saurabh Kirpal, called the petition premature and unfounded. They argued that the movie does not draw from Major Sharma’s life in any way and the trailer alone cannot be used to make such claims.

With the CBFC’s fresh review now complete, the Board’s stand supports the filmmakers’ position that the story is entirely fictional.

What Happens Next

With the objections rejected and the certification process back on track, Dhurandhar is expected to proceed toward release as per guidelines. The film is directed by Aditya Dhar and stars Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, R Madhavan and Arjun Rampal in key roles.

The spy action thriller is due in the theatres shortly and the recent clearance assures that the film can proceed without further postponement.
