Visakhapatnam, November 28: Indian conglomerate Adani Group, through its joint-venture AdaniConneX, plans to invest up to US $5 billion in Google’s forthcoming AI-data-centre project in India, according to a statement by Adani’s CFO on Friday.
What’s the project about and why it matters
- In October 2025, Google announced it will invest US $15 billion over five years to build a gigawatt-scale AI data-centre campus in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh the largest such bet by Google in India.
- Through AdaniConneX a joint venture of Adani Group and global data-centre operator EdgeConneX the Adani Group aims to contribute significantly to this infrastructure push, backing it with as much as $5 billion.
- The Visakhapatnam campus is designed to support heavy AI workloads, with initial capacity pegged at 1 gigawatt, along with subsea-cable connectivity and clean-energy infrastructure signalling India’s entry into next-gen AI infrastructure globally.
What Executive Commentary Says
Adani’s CFO, while confirming the investment plan, noted that multiple other players are also expressing interest in collaborating on data-centre capacity as the demand for compute and AI infrastructure surges nationwide.
Strategic Significance
- The collaboration positions India as a serious player in the global AI infrastructure race, leveraging domestic capital along with global tech leadership.
- For Adani historically rooted in ports, infrastructure, energy and logistics this marks a push into the digital-infrastructure and cloud-AI domain, signalling diversification.
- For Google, the partnership accelerates its India expansion, complements its plan to spend $15 billion, and reinforces commitment to “AI-ready” infrastructure backed by clean energy and modern data-centre architecture.
What Comes Next
The first phase will focus on building the initial 1 GW data-centre campus at Visakhapatnam, along with required power, connectivity and green-energy infrastructure. As demand rises for AI workloads, expansion plans will reportedly scale up capacity and possibly involve more collaborators.
Given India’s rapidly rising internet usage, growing AI adoption, and supportive policy environment, the Adani Google collaboration could reshape the country’s digital infrastructure landscape creating capacity, jobs and a foundation for large-scale AI deployment.
