New Delhi: Invoking “Shramev Jayate,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday described the rollout of four Labour Codes as a “historic day” for workers, calling it the biggest pro-labour initiative since 1947.
Writing on X, Modi said the reform “will greatly empower workers” while making regulatory compliance simpler and boosting ease of doing business.
From Thursday, the Code on Wages 2019, Industrial Relations Code 2020, Social Security Code 2020, and Occupational Safety Code 2020 have come into force nationwide, replacing 29 old Acts.
Women, Youth to Gain Most
The Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement that Modi specifically highlighted benefits for ‘Nari Shakti’ and ‘Yuva Shakti.’
In a series of posts, Modi wrote: “These codes will ensure social security, timely wages, and safe workplaces for workers. Our mothers, sisters, and young colleagues will particularly benefit.”
Will Accelerate Viksit Bharat Journey
The PM claimed the new labour laws would create fresh employment opportunities and raise productivity. “These reforms will build a robust ecosystem that protects workers’ rights in future and gives new strength to India’s economic growth,” he stated.
Modi said the move would accelerate the country’s journey towards becoming a developed nation.
According to the Labour Ministry, these laws will impact approximately 500 million workers across organized and unorganized sectors.
Industry bodies and labour organizations have welcomed the step. Experts believe gig workers, fixed-term employees, and women workers stand to benefit most.
The reforms consolidate decades-old fragmented legislation into a modern framework aimed at balancing worker protection with business flexibility, marking what the government calls a transformational shift in India’s labour governance.
