New Delhi: The Indian cricket team asserted its dominance at the Arun Jaitley Stadium defeating West Indies in the second and final Test to win the series 2-0. By chasing down the required 58 runs on the fifth morning India not only secured a series sweep but also achieved several historic milestones.
While West Indies showed commendable fighting spirit stretching the match to the final day with their best batting performance of the year they were unable to prevent India’s victory march.
A Flood of Records: India’s Dominance
This series victory gave rise to several impressive statistics:
- 10th Consecutive Series Win: This marks India’s 10th straight Test series victory against the West Indies. With this India has equalled South Africa’s record for the most successive series wins against a single opponent (South Africa also holds a 10-0 record against West Indies since 1998).
- The Unbreachable Delhi Fortress: This was India’s 14th consecutive unbeaten Test match in Delhi. The team has not lost a Test at this venue since 1987. In the 14 matches played here since 1993 India has won 12 and drawn 2.
- New Milestone in Home Victories: This was India’s 122nd Test win at home. With this victory India surpassed South Africa (121) to become the third team with the most home Test wins now trailing only England (241) and Australia (262).
Dhruv Jurel’s Unique Record
Wicketkeeper-batsman Dhruv Jurel who debuted against England in early 2024 has set a unique record. He has become the first Indian cricketer to be a part of the winning side in all of his first seven Test matches. He surpassed the previous record held by Bhuvneshwar Kumar who was part of a winning team in his first six Tests.
Dominance of the Bowlers: The Indian bowlers were so dominant throughout this series that the team lost only 13 wickets in total. This is a joint-best record for India in a series of two or more matches equalling their performance against Zimbabwe in 2000 where they also lost only 13 wickets.
Struggle and Comeback for West Indies
Despite the defeat, there were a few positives for the West Indies:
- Campbell’s Maiden Century: Opener John Campbell finally scored his first Test hundred in his 50th Test innings.
- Shai Hope’s Long Wait Ends: Shai Hope scored his third Test century his first since his twin hundreds in 2017. He had to wait a staggering 2968 days between centuries.
The West Indies scored 390 in their second innings which was their first team total exceeding 300 in the year 2025.
