Mumbai: Bollywood star Salman Khan is stepping into a completely new territory with his upcoming war drama, where he will play an army officer for the first time. The film, originally titled Battle of Galwan, has now been renamed Maatrubhumi, a move that has surprised many fans and industry observers.

The movie is produced by Apoorva Lakhia and the abrupt shift of the title caused some curiosity as to why the producers made the decision to do this. The actual cause of the shift has now been reported.

Why the title was changed

According to sources close to the project, the change is linked to the diplomatic sensitivity surrounding the India and China relationship. The earlier title directly referenced the Galwan conflict, which made the subject politically delicate.

According to the source, some official and strategic groups advised Salman Khan to consider changing the title and toning down the anti China aspects in the script. The actor and the producers took the feedback seriously and therefore decided to redefine the film in a way that it reflects the national mood at large without being disrespectful to the sensitive topic.

Consequently, the narrative has been fictionalised to some extent and the title was also renamed to Maatrubhumi to provide the narrative with a more universal patriotic feel.

Script changes and a deeper emotional story

The adjustments did not stop at the title. Reports say that a significant portion of the screenplay has been rewritten. The film is now designed as a more emotionally driven patriotic drama rather than a direct depiction of a real life military conflict.

The revised story will also highlight a stronger personal angle between Salman Khan’s army officer character and the role played by Chitrangda Singh. At its core, the film will explore the emotional struggle of a soldier who is balancing love and duty during times of conflict.

Such creative modifications were said to necessitate reshoots, which added more money to the total cost of the film. Nevertheless, Salman Khan is reported to be perfectly okay about the extra price because the creators did not want to make the final copy look fake and disrespectful.

Release plans and production status

A large portion of the film has already been completed, but some patchwork shooting may still take place during the summer. The makers are currently waiting for approvals from the Ministry of Defence before finalising the release date.

If everything goes as planned, Maatrubhumi is expected to arrive in theatres sometime between July and October.

As Salman Khan plays a soldier in his first movie and the movie transforms into a strong narrative on patriotism and love and sacrifice, the project is already one of the most talked about upcoming movies in the world of Bollywood.
