Mumbai: There was a time when filmmakers believed that long films could push audiences away. Anything beyond three hours was considered risky. But recent box office trends have completely changed that thinking. Big Bollywood and pan India blockbusters are already demonstrating that, provided that the content is interesting enough, the audiences will be happy to go through much longer lengths.
The trend began to shift in 2023 when Animal arrived in theatres with a runtime of 3 hours and 23 minutes. Instead of hurting its prospects, the length became a point of discussion and the movie ended up being a huge hit. The momentum continued with Pushpa 2 in 2025, which ran for about 3 hours and 20 minutes and still pulled huge crowds.
Then came Dhurandhar, the biggest Hindi hit of 2025. The film pushed boundaries even further with a runtime of 3 hours and 34 minutes. Despite being the longest of the lot, it emerged as a historic blockbuster and rewrote box office records. Clearly, the myth around long runtimes was officially broken.
Border 2 joins the elite 3 hour plus league
Now, another big film is set to join this exclusive club. According to Bollywood Hungama, Border 2 has a runtime of around 200 minutes, which roughly translates to 3 hours and 20 minutes. The last duration might vary a bit after the film gets the censor certificate, yet it is already known that it will be way beyond the three hour mark.
A source close to the film revealed that the makers were clear about keeping the film long. Border 2 is a period war drama and the team wanted the audience to have the full taste of the magnitude, emotion and intensity of the war being described. Cutting down the film would have compromised the impact they were aiming for.
Another major reason behind the length is the presence of four leading actors. Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh and Ahan Shetty all play important roles, and the film gives each character enough space to shine. The makers also found it necessary to do justice to each track instead of rushing through the story.
The source also added that despite the long duration, Border 2 is packed with drama, mass moments and strong patriotic sequences. The idea is to keep viewers emotionally invested throughout and create moments that naturally invite claps and whistles inside cinema halls.
Republic Day release and strong backing
Border 2 is scheduled to release on January 23, smartly timed around the Republic Day holiday on January 26. The number of days in the long weekend has been extended to four days, which means that the film will enjoy massive footfalls within the country.
While the original Border from 1997 was directed by J P Dutta, the sequel is helmed by Anurag Singh, who earlier directed Kesari in 2019. This time J P Dutta is playing the role of a producer alongside Nidhi Dutta. Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar are also the producers of the movie under the T Series brand, which further supports the project.
January turns into the month of long films
Interestingly, Border 2 is not the only lengthy release this month. The Raja Saab, which released this week, has a runtime of 3 hours and 9 minutes. Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan is also expected to run for about 3 hours and 3 minutes.
January is clearly setting a new tone for Indian cinema, where storytelling ambition is taking priority over strict runtime limits. As the audiences are becoming more accepting of long films which provide scale, emotion and spectacle, Border 2 deciding to join the 3 hour plus club is less of a gamble and more of a sure move with the history of the last several box office years.
