Sunny Deol & Aamir Khan’s Lahore 1947 Locks Release Date for Independence Week

Mumbai: Aamir Khan Productions has officially announced the release date of its much-awaited period drama Lahore 1947, featuring Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta in the lead roles. The film is set to arrive in cinemas on August 13, 2026, perfectly timed with the Independence Day weekend. The news has generated a massive hype, with Indian movie-makers, some of the most revered, united in a compelling history film.

Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan, Lahore 1947 marks a first-of-its-kind collaboration between Sunny Deol, Aamir Khan and Santoshi. This is the first film that the actor and the director are collaborating under the production banner of Aamir Khan, although their previous projects which they were acting in were memorable blockbusters.

A Powerful Team and a Stellar Cast

The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast that includes Shabana Azmi, Abhimanyu Singh, Karan Deol and Ali Fazal in pivotal roles, alongside Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta. The project also sees a reunion of Deol with Santoshi after their legendary works in the 1990s that include Ghayal, Damini and Ghatak and till now, they are still being applauded by the viewers.

Adding further weight to the film is its world-class technical team. The music has been composed by A R Rahman, with lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar, promising a soulful and emotionally rich soundtrack. The dialogues have been written by Rajkumar Santoshi and Asghar Wajahat. Santosh Sivan is the cinematographer and Shyam Salgaonkar is the editor. The sound design is by Oscar-winner Resul Pookutty, and the production design has been done by Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray.

Aamir Khan Productions issued a similar announcement on social media, stating the release date and that it would be a special reunion of Aamir Khan, Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi, their first time working together.

A Tribute to Dharmendra and a Special Emotional Connect

In the official press note, Aamir Khan also remembered the late Dharmendra, Sunny Deol’s father, who passed away in November 2025. Aamir stated that Lahore 1947 was among the best scripts that Dharmendra liked and that the old actor was given an opportunity to see the movie before his death.

This was among the favourite scripts of Dharamji, and I am so happy that he managed to watch the movie, which contributed an emotional touch to the project. This heartfelt tribute has made the film even more special for fans of the Deol family.

A Big Reunion and Major Comebacks

Lahore 1947 also reunites Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta, who previously shared screen space in Farz and The Hero: Love Story of a Spy. Their on-screen chemistry had been well received, and audiences are eager to see them together again after many years.

For Preity Zinta, the film marks her return to the big screen after her last release Bhaiaji Superhit in 2018, which arrived after a long delay. In the meantime, Sunny Deol is on a dream run at the box office with Border 2 which has already grossed over Rs 450 crore across the globe.
