Mumbai: Thalapathy Vijay’s much awaited film Jana Nayagan is now unlikely to hit theatres on January 9 as planned. This is delayed following the failure of the Central Board of Film Certification to grant the censor certificate on time leading to the makers having to resort to legal intervention.
With the Madras High Court reserving its verdict on the CBFC matter and announcing that the order will be delivered on the morning of January 9, the release has become technically impossible. Despite the verdict being in favour of the film, the CBFC would still require at least a day or two to issue the certificate meaning that it would not be possible to have a same day theatrical release.
Court hearing and certification roadblock
Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan is Vijay’s final film before his full time political entry, which has added to the massive anticipation around the project. After no clarity emerged from the censor board, the producers approached the Madras High Court seeking an urgent resolution. The court listened to arguments and deferred its order, but also raised the question of the priority of a release on January 9.
Already, the doubt has taken its toll on pre-bookings, particularly in Tamil Nadu and it is said that the official announcement of postponement is soon to come.
The producers informed the court that nearly ₹500 crore is at stake due to the delay. They further claimed the CBFC had already watched the movie on December 19, 2025, and orally stated a certificate of UA 16+. The makers claimed that they had adhered to all the recommended cuts and changes.
However, on January 5, the producers received an email stating that the film had been forwarded to an examining committee after the CBFC claimed it received a complaint alleging that the film hurts religious sentiments. The court has currently requested the censor board to provide information about the complaint which made the delay.
UK clearance adds contrast to India delay
While the film faces hurdles in India, Jana Nayagan has already received clearance overseas. The British Board of Film Classification has rated the film 15 and approved it for release in the UK. The classification was granted on January 6, 2026.
According to the BBFC, the film contains strong bloody violence, injury detail, and references to sexual violence. According to the synopsis, it is an action thriller in which a man stands against corrupt authorities and an arms dealer bent on causing havoc and disunity.
The BBFC report mentions depictions of terrorism, gunfights, beheadings, drug trafficking, and violence against women. It also mentions scenes of improvised weapons, kidnapping, racial discrimination and the consequences of terrorist attacks. Also included in the story are sensitive scenes like suggested sexual assault, false arrests, and conversations about sexual violence awareness.
What lies ahead for Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan
Despite the last minute setback, buzz around Jana Nayagan remains strong among fans and trade circles. The fact that the movie was the last screen performance by Vijay ahead of politics has further boosted interest.
All eyes are now on the Madras High Court verdict on January 9. Until then, the film’s theatrical release remains in limbo, marking a tense moment for one of the most anticipated Tamil films of the year.
