New Delhi, December 4: Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in New Delhi on Thursday for a two-day state visit and was personally welcomed at the airport by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Prime Minister greeted Putin with a warm handshake and a brief embrace, reflecting the close and longstanding nature of India–Russia ties. Visuals from the reception showed the two leaders smiling and exchanging words before proceeding towards the ceremonial convoy.
Putin’s visit comes at a strategically important moment for both nations, as New Delhi and Moscow prepare to review defence cooperation, energy partnerships, nuclear projects, and bilateral trade expansion during the 23rd Annual India–Russia Summit. The discussions are expected to cover joint defence production, long-term crude oil arrangements, and technological collaboration across key sectors.
Soon after his arrival, President Putin is scheduled to attend a private dinner hosted by Prime Minister Modi — an informal engagement that traditionally signals strong diplomatic warmth ahead of formal talks.
Security across the capital has been significantly heightened for the high-level visit, with multi-layer arrangements, restricted movement zones, and enhanced surveillance along key routes. Cultural performances and traditional protocol elements were also arranged to welcome the Russian president.
The formal summit between PM Modi and President Putin is scheduled for Friday, when both sides are expected to issue a joint statement outlining the next phase of India–Russia cooperation. The visit is being observed closely by global policymakers as India continues to balance its historic partnership with Russia while engaging with major Western powers.
