Richard Lloyd, the iconic guitarist of Television, has died at 75 after a battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy in punk and alternative rock.

Richard Lloyd, the renowned guitarist of the influential punk band Television, has passed away at the age of 75. His family confirmed that he died at his home in Chattanooga, Tennessee, due to bile duct cancer, a diagnosis he received in March 2026.

Lloyd was a pivotal figure in the New York City music scene during the 1970s, contributing to the band’s unique sound alongside frontman Tom Verlaine. Together, they crafted intricate guitar melodies that set Television apart from their contemporaries, who often relied on more straightforward punk rock styles.

Formed in 1973, Television quickly became a staple at the East Village dive bar CBGB, which was central to the burgeoning punk movement. The band’s debut album, Marquee Moon, released in 1977, is widely regarded as a landmark record, featuring classics such as “See No Evil” and the nearly 11-minute title track. This album has influenced countless artists in the alternative rock genre, including R.E.M. and Sonic Youth.

Born Richard John Alt on October 25, 1951, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Lloyd grew up in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village. He began playing guitar in his early teens and was inspired by the vibrant music scene of the era, including acts like The Grateful Dead. His early experiences at the Fillmore East shaped his musical style and aspirations.

Despite the band’s initial success, internal conflicts led to the departure of bassist Richard Hell in 1975, who went on to form his own influential group, The Heartbreakers. Television disbanded in 1978, partly due to Lloyd’s struggles with addiction and mental health issues. However, he continued to produce music, releasing nine solo albums throughout his career.

Lloyd’s contributions to music were not only significant during his time with Television but also in the years that followed, as he occasionally reunited with Verlaine despite their tumultuous relationship. Verlaine himself passed away in 2023, marking a significant loss for the music community.

Richard Lloyd is survived by his wife, Sheila O’Keefe Lloyd; his son, Dylan; and his brother, Eric Lloyd. His legacy as a guitarist and innovator in the punk and alternative rock scenes will be remembered by fans and musicians alike.
