Jaspur: In a shocking incident from Chhattisgarh’s Jaspur district, a woman allegedly killed her husband and concealed his body inside a maroon-colored suitcase at their home in Bhinjpur village under Duldula police station limits. The crime came to light when neighbors noticed a foul odor emanating from the residence.

The deceased has been identified as 43-year-old Santosh Bhagat. Police have registered a case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against his wife, Mangarita Bhagat, who has since absconded. A police team has been dispatched to Maharashtra to apprehend the accused.

Senior Superintendent of Police Shashi Mohan Singh briefed the media on Monday, stating that the case was registered based on a complaint filed by Vinod Minj, the victim’s elder brother. “The accused wife fled after committing the crime. Once she is arrested, we will be able to determine the exact motive behind the murder,” Singh said.

According to police sources, the grisly discovery was made when Vinod Minj, accompanied by villagers, searched the house after complaints about a persistent foul smell. Inside, they found a maroon suitcase covered with a blanket containing Santosh’s decomposing body. The Duldula police were immediately notified and arrived at the scene to recover the corpse.

Investigations revealed that a heated argument erupted between the couple on November 8. Police believe that during this altercation, Mangarita attacked her husband with a hammer, killing him on the spot. In a disturbing detail, one of the couple’s daughters was listening to the argument via mobile phone but had no indication that the dispute had turned fatal.

According to family members, Santosh and Mangarita had three daughters, all of whom are married and living with their respective in-laws. Mangarita had been working in Mumbai and had returned to Bhinjpur only a few days before the incident. Police sources indicate that marital discord was common between the couple, and domestic disputes had been an ongoing issue in their relationship.

The victim’s brother told investigators that he and Santosh lived in separate houses in Bhinjpur village. Frustrated by continuous family conflicts, Mangarita allegedly took the extreme step of murdering her husband, police said.

The case has sent shockwaves through the quiet village community. Local residents expressed disbelief that a domestic dispute could escalate to such a violent conclusion. Police are actively pursuing leads to track down the accused and bring her to justice.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to piece together the complete sequence of events that led to this tragic incident.
