New Delhi: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the Indian Navy’s most sophisticated communication satellite, GSAT-7R (CMS-03), from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on Saturday, November 2, 2025. This indigenous satellite represents a quantum leap in India’s maritime security capabilities and reaffirms the nation’s commitment to self-reliance in critical defense infrastructure.

Weighing approximately 4,400 kilograms, GSAT-7R holds the distinction of being India’s heaviest communication satellite to date. More significantly, it’s entirely designed and developed domestically, incorporating cutting-edge indigenous components specifically engineered to meet the Indian Navy’s operational demands. This achievement underscores the growing synergy between India’s space program and defense preparedness.

The satellite’s deployment comes at a crucial juncture when maritime security challenges are becoming increasingly complex. With the Indian Ocean Region witnessing heightened strategic activity from multiple nations, particularly China’s expanding naval presence, GSAT-7R will provide India with enhanced situational awareness and communication superiority across this vital waterway.

GSAT-7R’s coverage spans the entire Indian Ocean Region, offering robust telecommunication capabilities that will transform how the Navy coordinates its operations. This launch marks the second dedicated communication satellite for the Indian Navy. The first, GSAT-7 (nicknamed Rukmini), was launched in 2013 and primarily serves surface vessels and aircraft. GSAT-7R complements and expands these capabilities, creating a more comprehensive communication infrastructure for naval operations.

The emphasis on indigenous development reflects India’s “Aatmanirbharta” (self-reliance) initiative in defense technology. Rather than depending on foreign satellites or leasing transponder capacity from other nations—which poses security risks and operational limitations—India has developed its own secure communication infrastructure. Maritime Domain Awareness, a critical aspect of modern naval operations, will receive a substantial boost from GSAT-7R.
