New Delhi: A recent incident at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has started a big discussion about work culture and employee rights. A TCS employee posted on the Reddit forum ‘r/IndianWorkplace’ criticizing the company for not allowing leaves during the Diwali week. The employee called this decision a “new low” in work culture and said it shows how the company treats its employees.
So we are not even allowed to enjoy Diwali Leaves. Welcome to TCS.

The post explained that a manager told the team in a group chat that no more Diwali leave requests would be approved. This upset many employees who felt that TCS was ignoring an important Indian festival. The employee also pointed out a double standard, saying the company easily allows leave during Christmas but not during Diwali.
The worker also condemned the manager as spineless and he had made the working environment a challenge. This indicates that not all employees are pleased with the communication and way managers address the issues of employees.
TCS replied that leave policy is business need-based and is prepared to provide smooth operations. The company also claimed that it cares about the employees and will consider individual cases.
The response of people has been varying. Others see that the company has to cope with work and others believe that the company ought to observe Indian festivals more. This has resulted in a larger debate regarding the way business entities ought to strike a balance between work and values of the cultures and religious practices.
Why This Matters for TCS?
This problem demonstrates the importance of companies to have inclusive and fair policies. The work places are expected to honor and embrace cultural and religious practices of the employees. The employees feel important and happy due to flexible policies, contributing to better performance of the company.
With the debate going on, it is apparent that the large corporations such as TCS must strike the balance between operating the business and taking care of the workers. Ensuring that workers are respected and understood is highly important in the contemporary diverse work places.
