The latest Godzilla film achieves the highest debut for a live-action foreign-language movie in North America.

In a spectacular showing at the box office, ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ has roared to a remarkable $31.6 million debut, setting a new record for live-action foreign-language films in North America. This achievement surpasses the previous record held by the 2002 film ‘Hero,’ which opened with $17.8 million.

Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ has captivated audiences, earning an impressive 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an ‘A’ grade on CinemaScore exit polls. The film’s success can be attributed to its strong reviews, audience enthusiasm, and significant interest in premium large formats (PLFs), including Imax. Notably, Imax screenings alone contributed $12.7 million, accounting for approximately 40% of the film’s domestic gross.

The film’s opening weekend saw it dominate the box office, outperforming Warner Bros. Animation’s ‘The Cat in the Hat,’ which managed to secure $20 million from 4,003 locations. Despite being based on a beloved children’s book, ‘The Cat in the Hat’ fell short of expectations, marking a disappointing start for the animated feature.

‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ was released in 3,254 theatres and benefited from a marketing budget of under $10 million in North America. The film’s audience demographics revealed a diverse turnout, with 37% Caucasian, 32% Hispanic and Latino, 13% Asian American, and 13% Black viewers. The film particularly appealed to younger audiences, with 63% of ticket buyers aged between 18 and 34.

As the first Japanese production filmed for Imax, ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ has not only set a box office record but also showcased the potential of foreign-language films in the North American market. The film’s success is a testament to the enduring popularity of the Godzilla franchise and the effective marketing strategies employed by Gkids.
