Mumbai: Babil Khan, the son of the late Irrfan Khan, posted an emotional tribute on what would have been his father’s 59th birthday that instantly resonated with fans. Taking to Instagram, Babil posted two unseen photographs that beautifully captured the quiet, deeply personal bond he shared with his late father.
The first image is a nostalgic glimpse from Babil’s childhood. It shows a young Babil resting on Irrfan Khan, both relaxed on a simple floor mat. The candid moment reflects warmth, comfort, and a sense of everyday love that needs no words. The second picture belongs to the cast of the Angrezi Medium, the last movie by Irrfan, in which Babil served as camera assistant. The photograph shows the father and son talking, not only emphasizing the emotional connection between them but also their mutual love of the film.

“Sofa mode activated”: a memory that stayed with fans
Alongside the photos, Babil wrote a caption that struck an emotional chord. “Pictures of you. Pictures of me. (I used to say ‘sofa mode activated’ before I jumped on him and fell asleep on his back).” The simple memory brought smiles and tears in equal measure, reminding followers of the gentle relationship the two shared.
The comment section quickly filled with messages remembering Irrfan Khan’s immense contribution to Indian cinema. Many users called him one of the finest actors the industry has ever seen. Others talked of his experience, how he came up out of nothingness without any industry support and created a legacy of sheer talent and perseverance. A few of the fans too sent love and strength to Babil, saying that he kept the memory of his father alive with such sincerity.

Babil’s quiet phase and lasting legacy
The post comes at a time when Babil Khan has largely kept a low profile online. In May last year, he was at the centre of public attention after an emotional video of him went viral, where he described Bollywood as the “fakest industry.” The video raised the question of his mental health, and Babil temporarily blocked his Instagram account because of it. He later came back to explain that his statements had been misunderstood and never intended to be an attack but to show his admiration.
Since then, Babil has stayed relatively quiet and has not announced any new projects. He made his acting debut with Netflix’s Qala, followed by Logout on ZEE5. He also had a project with filmmaker Sai Rajesh with whom he was supposed to work, but the project was not developed because of unplanned circumstances.
Born on January 7, 1967, Irrfan Khan remains one of the most respected and loved actors in Indian cinema. His performances are still inspiring people all over the world as in the case of The Lunchbox or in the case of life of Pi or Slumdog Millionaire. Though he passed away in 2020, his influence remains timeless.
