Stranger Things officially closed its journey with the Season 5 finale on New Year’s Eve, marking the end of one of Netflix’s most popular series. But instead of calm acceptance, the finale has triggered a wave of online speculation. Another fan theory named “Conformity Gate” has proposed a reason that what the viewers watched might not have been the actual ending.
The theory states that the last scenes of the show may be a well-crafted illusion by Vecna, and it is possible that the villain is not really dead and that another episode is yet to be dropped.

What Happens in the Stranger Things Season 5 Finale
In the final episode, Hawkins group makes a final mission to the Upside Down to save the kidnapped kids and kill Vecna. A military interference and the death of Kali are some of the biggest setbacks to their plan. Still, they manage to reach Vecna’s lair in the Abyss, hidden inside the Pain Tree, which is revealed to be the Mind Flayer itself.
Eleven goes into the body of the Mind Flayer, to combat Vecna internally, whilst the rest of the group goes to battle him externally. Will connects to the hive mind one final time to save Eleven and help push Vecna into a massive spike. Joyce ultimately delivers the killing blow, beheading Vecna with an axe after declaring that he targeted the wrong family.
As the group returns to Hawkins, Dr. Kay and her soldiers intercept them. Eleven loses her life to save that of her friends by going back to the Upside Down. And her destiny remains unresolved, especially after Mike later hints during a Dungeons and Dragons game that she may still be alive.
Eighteen months later, the show presents what looks like a peaceful epilogue. The teens graduate from Hawkins High with Dustin as valedictorian. Lucas and Max are now a couple, the Wheelers escape after the Demogorgon attack, and Hopper asks Joyce to marry him at Enzo. The elder generation is also going on with their lives as Robin is studying at Smith College, Steve is coaching at Little League, Nancy is working in The Boston Herald, and Jonathan is studying at NYU. They plan monthly meetups at Robin’s uncle’s house in Philadelphia.
Why Fans Think the Ending Is an Illusion
Despite the happy resolution, fans quickly began spotting details that feel off. Supporters of the Conformity Gate theory believe the epilogue is a false reality created by Vecna.
The most talked-about scene is the graduation scene, in which multiple characters are holding their hands in a pose resembling the one used by Henry Creel. Other members of the Wheeler family are also seen with hair cuts that are shorter and resemble the appearance of Henry. Other clues include a blank yellow poster in the background, radio tower dials that change color between shots, and repeated appearances of the “WHATZIT?” board game.
Some fans even claim the spines of the final Dungeons and Dragons books spell out “X A LIE,” which they interpret as a message that the peaceful ending in Dimension X is not real.
Suzie and Vickie are also absent in the epilogue, which may cause speculation that Vecna was not able to mention them since he did not know them well.
January 7 Speculation and Netflix’s Silence
Conformity Gate believers think a surprise final episode could arrive on January 7, 2026. The date gained attention after Netflix shared a cryptic post reading “Your future is on the way” with a January 7 tag. This date also coincides with Orthodox Christmas, which fits the trend of the shows of the fifth season, releasing episodes on big holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve.
However, neither Netflix nor the Duffer Brothers have acknowledged the theory. The platform heavily promoted Episode 8 as the official series finale and even screened it in over 500 theaters across North America.
The Duffer Brothers have also said that they have thought out the ending of each character. Matt Duffer told Netflix’s Tudum that the team spoke extensively with the cast to ensure everyone was satisfied with where their characters ended up.
To top it off, Netflix dropped the trailer of the One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5 on January 5. The documentary, premiering on January 12, follows the cast and crew as they say goodbye to the series.
While the Conformity Gate theory continues to trend online, all signs point to Stranger Things truly reaching its end. It is yet to be seen whether January 7 holds a surprise, or it will be more debate amongst fans but at this point, the Upside Down seems to be shut permanently.
