Washington / London: U.S. President Donald Trump has once again praised his relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing himself as “very close” to the Indian leader. His remarks come at a crucial time, with Indo-U.S. trade negotiations facing persistent hurdles.
According to Livemint, Trump told reporters in the UK that despite ongoing disagreements on tariffs and India’s oil imports from Russia, his personal rapport with Modi remains strong. Within just 48 hours, this is the second time Trump has sent a message highlighting ties with New Delhi, signaling a thaw in recent tensions.
However, as NDTV notes, Trump’s mixed messaging reflects the complexity of the moment. While affirming “bonhomie” with India, the U.S. has also pressed New Delhi on sensitive trade and energy issues, including high tariff rates and sanction-related compliance.
The remarks are being read in diplomatic circles as both reassurance and pressure: reassurance of strong political ties, and pressure to advance trade concessions. With India–U.S. trade valued at more than $120 billion, the coming weeks will be critical in determining whether the goodwill translates into concrete policy outcomes.
