Sushila Karki Emerges as Top Contender for Nepal’s Interim Prime Minister Amid Gen-Z Uprising

Nepal’s first female Chief Justice accepts youth-backed proposal; Army and President to decide constitutional path forward.

Sushila Karki, Nepal’s first female Chief Justice, has become the frontrunner to lead the country’s interim government following weeks of Gen-Z–driven protests that toppled the existing administration. The demonstrations, fueled by anger over corruption, unemployment, and restrictions on social media, have forced Nepal into a historic political reset.

Late Wednesday night, youth leaders coordinating the protests held an online vote, agreeing that no candidate from established political parties should be considered. Instead, they selected Sushila Karki, whose reputation for integrity, judicial independence, and anti-corruption rulings has earned her widespread respect.

Karki has accepted the proposal in principle, though constitutional hurdles remain. Nepal’s Army leadership and President Ram Chandra Paudel are expected to meet this week to determine the legal framework for appointing an interim prime minister outside the traditional parliamentary process.

In recent statements, Karki emphasized that her role would be to honor the sacrifices of protesters and restore faith in governance through transparency, justice, and accountability. She also acknowledged India’s role in supporting Nepal’s democratic aspirations, noting her “very good impression of PM Modi.”

Analysis

Karki’s rise as the consensus candidate reflects the power of Nepal’s Gen-Z movement, which has demanded a clean break from party politics. Her judicial background and record of independence position her as a symbol of accountability. Yet, challenges remain: constitutional clarity, political pushback, and balancing power between the president, parliament, and the army. If successfully navigated, her appointment could mark the beginning of a new democratic chapter for Nepal.
