Sochi, Oct 3(HS): Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and reaffirmed the depth of India–Russia ties while addressing the Valdai Discussion Forum in Sochi on Thursday.

Speaking to global security experts and diplomats, Putin described Modi as a “balanced, wise, and nationally oriented” leader and emphasized the trust and comfort he feels in their personal relationship. The Russian president stated that unlike in other bilateral relations, Moscow and India have “never had any problems or interstate tensions,” stressing that both sides respect each other’s sensitivities.

He highlighted the historical roots of the partnership dating back to Soviet support for India’s independence movement, noting that India continues to value that legacy.Putin also defended India’s decision to resist U.S. pressure on oil imports from Russia, saying it underscored India’s sovereignty. He acknowledged the existing trade imbalance due to India’s large crude purchases and indicated Moscow would expand imports of Indian agricultural products and pharmaceuticals to address the gap.

Looking forward, Putin pointed to vast untapped potential in economic cooperation, but warned that obstacles such as financing, logistics, and payment systems must be resolved to fully realize opportunities. He expressed support for a proposed joint Indo-Russian fund to develop artificial intelligence and advanced technology.

The visit also comes ahead of Putin’s planned trip to India in early December, where measures to strengthen economic and strategic cooperation are expected. He underlined that the 15th anniversary of the “special strategic privileged partnership” reflects the stable nature of bilateral ties and noted that both governments often coordinate closely on global issues.

In praising Modi’s vision, Putin positioned India as an independent actor on the global stage and expressed confidence that Moscow and India would continue to deepen their engagement across multiple sectors.
