Iran has officially entered its fifth day of protest as tensions rise between demonstrators and security forces. The unrest has turned deadly as it claimed lives of one security guard and 5 civilians.
Earlier, on December 31, a man was killed after security forces opened fire during a protest. With this incident, the death toll has risen to 6 civilians and 1 member of the security forces.
The protests began on December 28, initially led by merchants in the capital, Tehran. In recent days, thousands of Gen Z protesters have also joined the demonstrations.
Meanwhile, Iranian authorities in Tehran have arrested 30 people on charges of disturbing public order, state-affiliated news agency Tasnim reported on Thursday, following days of protests over soaring prices that have at times turned deadly.
“After a coordinated operation by security and intelligence services, 30 individuals accused of disrupting public order in the Malard district of western Tehran were identified and arrested last night,” the report said.
