Mumbai: The controversy surrounding the song Sarke Chunar from the upcoming film KD: The Devil is growing bigger by the day. What started as social media criticism has now reached top authorities, with the National Human Rights Commission stepping in and calling the content a possible violation of human rights.

The song, featuring Nora Fatehi and Sanjay Dutt, has been under fire for its alleged vulgar lyrics and suggestive choreography since its release earlier this week.

NHRC steps in, seeks explanation

Considering the grievance with seriousness, the NHRC has given notices to the Central Board of Film Certification, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and Google India. The authorities have been requested to research the issue and provide an Action Taken Report within two weeks.

The members of the bench through the chairmanship of Priyank Kanoongo, noted that the allegations imply that the song has sexually suggestive and doubles sense lyrics, which are not fit to be played publicly particularly to the children. The grievance pointed to the fact that this kind of content is readily available on television, social networks among other societal mediums and that it may affect the psyche of minors and influence their behaviour adversely.

Kanoongo further questioned how the song was cleared by the censor board and said that the track should be removed from all platforms. He also stated that if any officials are found responsible for approving such content, action must be taken against them.

Complaints, FIR and growing backlash

The issue has also reached state authorities. The State Commissions for Women in Haryana and Karnataka have written to the CBFC raising concerns about the approval of the song. In a major development, an FIR has been filed against the makers.

Amid the backlash, music label Anand Audio has taken down the song from YouTube and social media platforms. The Hindi lyricist Raqib Alam has distanced himself from the controversy, clarifying that he only translated the original Kannada version and had already expressed his concerns over the lyrics.

Sarke Chunar was released on Monday and in no time attracted the attention of the web, and the reason was wrong. The song is a dance track in KD The Devil, that will be released in theatres in the coming month. The promotion campaign of the movie is currently facing a major setback, as legal trouble is on the rise, regulatory bodies are engaged, and the controversy around the song Sarke Chunar by the upcoming movie KD: The Devil is expanding at an unforeseen pace.

What began as criticism on social media has escalated to include the highest authorities of government with the National Human Rights Commission intervening and terming the material as a potential infringement of human rights.
