New Delhi: The Indian team is on the verge of victory in the ongoing Test match between India and the West Indies but a brilliant performance by the hosts’ batsmen has dragged the match into the fifth day. Following on, the West Indies scored 390 runs in the second innings, thanks to brilliant centuries from John Campbell (115) and Shai Hope (103), setting India a target of 121 runs. By the end of the fourth day’s play, India had scored 63 runs for the loss of one wicket and now need only 58 runs to win.
West Indies’ Fighting Counterattack
When India enforced the follow-on before halftime, it seemed the match would end on the fourth day. However, the Indian bowlers had to toil for over 200 overs on a lifeless pitch. Contrary to expectations the West Indies displayed strong determination. John Campbell scored his first Test century while Shai Hope scored a century after eight years.
Campbell, who started the day with 87, completed his century with a brilliant six. A 59-run partnership between Hope and Roston Chase also increased the anxiety in the Indian camp.
India’s comeback with the new ball
As soon as the second new ball became available after lunch, the Indian bowlers made a comeback in the match. Mohammed Siraj broke the partnership by dismissing Shai Hope. Kuldeep Yadav then displayed his spin magic, taking three quick wickets to dismantle the West Indies middle order.
However, in the end, a 79-run partnership between Justin Greaves (50*) and the last wicket prolongs India’s wait. Jasprit Bumrah finally broke the partnership and ended the West Indies innings.
Chasing the target and fifth day’s play
Chasing a small target of 121 runs, India tried to make an aggressive start. Yashasvi Jaiswal tried to score quickly but was caught at long-on off Warrican in the second over. Sai Sudarshan (30*) and KL Rahul (25*) then took no further risks and finished the day safely. India will now aim to complete the formality on the fifth day.
