Bangalore, 13 September (H.S.): Eight people were killed and more than 20 others injured in a tragic accident during a Ganesh immersion procession, late in the evening Yesterday near Mosale Hosahalli in Hassan taluk, Karnataka.
The accident occurred when the driver of a mini canter, which was travelling from Hassan to Holenarasipur, lost control and ran over a procession of people who were celebrating Ganesh Visarjan.
Villagers from Mosale Hosahalli and Hirehalli participated in the Ganesh Visarjana procession.
The incident occurred when a canter vehicle suddenly ran into the procession, while trying to avoid an head on collision with a two wheeler, which suddenly entered the highway. The deceased have been shifted to the Community Health Center morgue.
Those with serious injuries have been admitted to Hassan and Holenarasipur government and private hospitals. It is understood that the death toll is likely to rise, with some of those seriously injured in the incident in critical condition.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who expressed grief over the incident, announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each for the families of the deceased and said that the government will bear the medical expenses of the injured.
Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said on social media that he was shocked to learn of the news and expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
