Imphal, 12 September (HS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming tour of Manipur has been finalised, marking his first visit to the state since ethnic violence erupted more than two years ago.

As per the official schedule, Modi will first arrive in Churachandpur (CCpur), where he will lay foundation stones for development projects and interact with families affected by the prolonged conflict. Following this, he will head to Imphal to address a public meeting at the historic Kangla Fort, alongside launching and dedicating several initiatives.

Manipur Chief Secretary informed that the prime minister will reach Kangla around 2.30 pm after engaging with displaced families in the valley districts. “The Prime Minister will inaugurate projects worth ₹1,200 crore and lay foundation stones for schemes totalling ₹7,300 crore. These ventures reflect his consistent focus on Manipur’s development and welfare,” the official stated, appealing to citizens to participate in large numbers.

Meanwhile, Imphal has been decked up to welcome the prime minister. Streets have been adorned with banners, billboards and gates, including a massive 20-foot welcome arch near the BJP state headquarters along the route from the airport to Kangla. Additional displays highlighting the new projects have been set up in Sanjenthong and close to the Nupi Lan complex. Road medians have been repainted and barricades installed on the seven-kilometre stretch leading to the fort.

The visit takes place amid sharp criticism from opposition parties, who have attacked the prime minister for not setting foot in Manipur since May 2023, when clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities triggered large-scale unrest. The violence has so far claimed over 260 lives and forced thousands to flee their homes.
