Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the state on September 22 to inaugurate the redeveloped Tripura Sundari (Matabari) temple at Udaipur and offer prayers. He made the announcement at the closing ceremony of the Neermahal Jal Utsav.
Redevelopment under PRASHAD
Officials said the facelift of the shrine has been executed under the Union Tourism Ministry’s pilgrimage infrastructure programme (officially styled PRASHAD). Media briefings peg central expenditure at around ₹51 crore; separate state support of ₹7 crore has also been cited in local updates, with some describing the outlay as “over ₹52 crore.” (The Union scheme’s official name and remit are detailed by PIB.)

History & significance
Situated in Udaipur (Gomati), Tripura Sundari is among the 51 Shakti Peethas. The present sanctum, in the Bengali ek-ratna idiom, is widely dated to 1501 CE under Maharaja Dhanya Manikya—placing the shrine’s age at roughly 524 years.
Kalyan Sagar & turtle conservation
On the temple’s eastern flank, Kalyan Sagar lake shelters the endangered black softshell (“Bostami”) turtle. In May–June 2025, the state cleared a year-long scientific study with Turtle Survival Alliance and the forest department to assess and protect the habitat.
Tourism push: 51 Shakti Peeth replicas
Saha also flagged a parallel project: a park featuring replicas of all 51 Shakti Peethas at Bandower in Gomati district, budgeted at about ₹97–98 crore, to bolster spiritual tourism.
