New Delhi: A sensational plot to assassinate stand-up comedian and Bigg Boss 17 winner Munawar Faruqui was foiled by Delhi Police’s Special Cell after a midnight encounter at Kalindi Kunj–Jaitpur road. The police arrested two shooters, identified as Rahul from Panipat and Sahil from Bhiwani (Haryana), who sustained bullet injuries in their legs during the exchange of fire.

According to officials, the duo was working under the directions of notorious gangsters Goldy Brar, Rohit Godara, and Virendra Charan, currently believed to be operating from abroad. Both shooters have confessed that the target was Munawar Faruqui, allegedly for his past jokes on Hindu deities which had stirred controversies in recent years.

Sources revealed that the accused had already conducted recces in Mumbai and Bengaluru, attempting to strike earlier but failing due to last-minute changes in Munawar’s schedule. Delhi became their next intended location. The contract, investigators believe, was aimed at boosting the gang’s “influence and publicity” by targeting a high-profile celebrity.

Gangster Background of Shooters

  • Rahul is already wanted in multiple murder cases, including the Yamunanagar liquor traders’ killing (2024).
  • Sahil has several financial crime cases registered against him in Bhiwani and Sirsa.
Both men were armed and opened fire when police signalled them to stop. They were overpowered after a brief gunfight.

Police Recovery and Charges

The Special Cell recovered weapons, a motorbike and other incriminating material from the spot. A case has been registered under sections of attempt to murder, Arms Act, and conspiracy charges. Further investigation is underway to establish the deeper nexus of international handlers and local executioners.

Munawar’s Controversial Past

Munawar Faruqui, who rose to fame through stand-up comedy and reality television, has long been a polarizing figure. In 2021, he was arrested in Madhya Pradesh for allegedly hurting religious sentiments, though he later denied ever insulting any faith. His rising popularity, especially after winning Bigg Boss, has made him both a youth icon and a target for extremist elements.

National Debate

The incident has reignited the debate on freedom of expression versus religious sentiments. While police are investigating the underworld links, civil society and fans are concerned about the safety of artists and comedians who push boundaries in their performances.
