New Delhi: Marking the diamond jubilee of the 1965 India-Pakistan war, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday interacted with veterans and families of martyrs at an event held at South Block, New Delhi. The ceremony commemorated 60 years of India’s victory and paid tribute to the indomitable courage of the soldiers who ensured the nation’s sovereignty.
Addressing the gathering, the Defence Minister saluted the supreme sacrifice of India’s bravehearts, underlining that “every Indian soldier serves the motherland with the conviction that the sovereignty and integrity of the nation will never be compromised at any cost.”
Remembering Heroes of 1965
Rajnath Singh recalled pivotal battles such as Asal Uttar, Chawinda, and Phillora, praising the unmatched bravery of Indian troops. He made special mention of Param Vir Chakra awardee CQMH Abdul Hamid, who destroyed multiple enemy tanks at Asal Uttar before laying down his life. “Hamid showed that courage is not about the size of the weapon, but the size of the heart,” he said, noting that his legacy continues to inspire generations.
The minister also credited then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri’s leadership for uniting the nation during testing times. “No war is fought only on the battlefield; victory is the collective resolve of an entire nation,” Singh remarked.
Operation Sindoor and Present-Day Resolve
Drawing parallels with modern challenges, Singh highlighted Operation Sindoor conducted after the Pahalgam terror attack. He said the operation demonstrated India’s capability and determination under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “It shook us, but did not break our morale. Operation Sindoor showed our enemies how strong we are. Victory is no longer an exception, it has become our habit,” he declared.
Commitment to Soldiers and Veterans
The Defence Minister reaffirmed the government’s “top priority” towards the welfare of serving personnel, veterans, and families of martyrs. He stressed ongoing efforts in defence modernisation, enhanced training, and equipment upgrades to ensure the armed forces never face a shortage of resources.
A Gathering of Legacy and Inspiration
The event was attended by Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, senior commanders, decorated veterans, and gallantry awardees. Lt Gen Manoj Kumar Katiyar, GOC-in-C Western Command, presented a historical account of the 1965 war, while a special documentary showcased landmark battles including Asal Uttar, Akhnoor, and Khem Karan.
Adding personal perspectives, veterans such as Lt Gen Satish K Nambiar (Retd) shared strategic reflections, while Maj RS Bedi (Retd) recounted gripping battlefield experiences. Their stories served as a reminder of the resilience and courage that defined India’s victory.
Conclusion
The diamond jubilee celebrations stood as a powerful tribute to the sacrifices of 1965 and a call to uphold the enduring values of courage, sacrifice, and service before self for future generation
