Belém (Brazil), November 18: India has called for a deeper and more coordinated global effort to accelerate the transition towards low-carbon industrial growth, as Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav addressed the LeadIT Industry Leaders’ Roundtable at UNFCCC CoP30 in Belém on Sunday.
Speaking as Co-Chair of the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT), Yadav said the world had entered a decisive decade where countries must shift from “goal-setting to implementation” to meet the climate targets committed under the Paris Agreement.
India Highlights Balanced Model of Growth and Emission Reduction
Yadav emphasized India’s ability to grow rapidly while steadily lowering emissions.
He highlighted that India—now the world’s fourth-largest economy and its fastest-growing major economy—has successfully reduced the emission intensity of its GDP by 36% between 2005 and 2020, showcasing a rare development–environment balance.
LeadIT Expands to 18 Countries and 27 Global Companies
The Minister announced significant progress within the LeadIT platform—jointly launched by India and Sweden in 2019—which now includes:
- 18 member nations
- 27 global companies
- Newest entrant: SKF
He called LeadIT “one of the most meaningful global collaborations” in advancing competitive and low-carbon industrial pathways.
India–Sweden Joint Projects to Begin Soon
Under the Industry Transition Platform (ITP)—funded jointly by India and Sweden—18 industries and research institutions from both countries will soon kick off collaborative projects focusing on:
- Value creation from industrial by-products and gases
- Carbon capture & utilisation (CCU)
- AI-driven process optimisation
- Electrification
- Hydrogen-based industrial heating
Yadav said these initiatives represent the next phase of “technology-centric climate action.”
Tata Motors–Volvo Partnership Showcased as Global Case Study
A key example highlighted during the session was a LeadIT-facilitated partnership between Tata Motors and Volvo Group to decarbonize heavy-duty transport.
Yadav said such partnerships demonstrate how “shared ambition can translate into collective action,” creating scalable solutions for global industrial transformation.
India Invites Global Partners to Accelerate Industrial Transition
Concluding his remarks, the Union Minister urged countries and industries to strengthen cooperation and join India in driving global industrial transformation.
He said accelerated efforts were essential to meet Paris climate goals and “create a sustainable future for generations to come.”
