Mumbai: Released in 2019 War created a sensation at the box office. The film won over audiences with its powerful action, star power and cinematic package. when the next chapter of the franchise War 2 arrived it failed to live up to expectations. War 2 initially earned well but as the weeks progressed the film’s performance diminished.

Why didn’t War 2 replicate War’s success? Several reasons can be seen for this.

War was directed by Siddharth Anand who presented a masterful package of action and entertainment that showcased every talent of the actors. Vishal-Shekhar’s music and lyrics also left an impact that resonates even today. War 2 was directed by Ayan Mukerji who has previously worked in romantic films. Giving him the responsibility of directing a thriller film like this proved to be a loss for Yash Raj Films. Sources say that Dharma Productions has stopped the production of Brahmastra 2 a film to be made by Ayan Mukerji due to his direction of War 2.

Pritam’s music failed to captivate audiences like War and Amitabh Bhattacharya’s lyrics also failed to resonate with people. Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR two excellent dancers, needed the best music for their dance but the lyrics of the song “Janabe-Aali” were unintelligible to the audience although the hook step was certainly appreciated.

Brahmastra directed by Ayan Mukerji earned well but critics criticized its visuals and story-line. This is because his lack of experience with spy-thrillers prevented the film from having a strong story. Some critics argue that Rani Mukerji is married to Yash Raj Films producer Aditya Chopra and Ayan is her brother which is why the film was given to Ayan.

When you’re aiming to make a film with a budget of ₹300–₹400 crore starring two big stars Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR, into an international hit the story needs to be strong which War 2 completely fails to achieve. While War 2 had a strong start earning ₹204 crore nett in India in the first eight days it declined sharply thereafter. Furthermore considering its worldwide total War 2 grossed approximately ₹371 crore, which is considered relatively low for a big-budget film.

“War 2,” starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR is now available on Netflix from October 9, 2025 in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu language options but its audience response has been mixed after its OTT release.

Netflix wrote in its post: “Double the rage. Double the rampage. Ready for the War? Watch War 2 out 9 October on Netflix.” Some users reacted with curiosity while others with laughing emojis and skepticism.

Hrithik shared some images of his character “Kabir” from the film on his Instagram writing: “Everything seemed so perfect. Like it’s meant to be. But something was lurking behind that presumptuous certainty. A voice I kept shutting out.” This statement indicates that he has an emotional connection to the project and wants to see it as more than just an action film.

War 2 now available on Netflix it was intended to attract audiences who missed theaters. media reviews have raised questions about its screenplay and plot particularly regarding the VFX, suspense and rhythm.
