Mumbai: Border 2 has achieved a massive milestone at the box office, emerging as the highest grossing Indian film based on a war or conflict. The movie has surpassed the Rs. 350 crore mark across the globe in a mere nine days since its release, affirming its status as one of the largest blockbusters in the war genre.
Directed by Anurag Singh, Border 2 is a spiritual sequel to J P Dutta’s iconic 1997 film Border. The movie stars Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Ahan Shetty in the major parts and has resonated with a powerful emotional appeal among viewers in India and abroad.
Box Office Numbers That Rewrite Records
As of the ninth day it was in theatres, Border 2 had earned about Rs. 252.25 crore nett in India, with an equivalent domestic gross of about Rs. 303 crore. A major highlight of its run was its Republic Day performance, when the film earned a remarkable Rs. 60 crore nett in a single day.
The war drama has already earned a little more than 5 million dollars abroad. This has increased the global revenue of the film to over Rs. 350 crore together with its domestic earnings.
On Saturday, Border 2 officially crossed the lifetime worldwide collections of two major war based films. Uri: The Surgical Strike, directed by Aditya Dhar and starring Vicky Kaushal, had earned Rs. 342 crore globally. Fighter, with Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone, has ended its global collections at Rs. 344 crore in 2024. Border 2 has now overtaken both of them and is also far ahead of Kesari which grossed Rs. 202 crore globally.
Footfalls Tell a Different Story
While Border 2 now leads in terms of box office collections, the picture changes when footfalls are taken into account. The majority of the largest Indian war films were released prior to 2000 when the cost of the ticket was considerably less, thus leading to a much higher audience numbers.
The original Border remains the most watched Indian war film, with over 3.7 crore tickets sold during its initial run. Dharmendra’s Haqeeqat, released in 1964 and 1965, sold close to 2 crore tickets. Comparatively, Border 2 has sold slightly more than 1 crore tickets within the domestic market to date and it will hardly beat these classics when it comes to footfalls.
Large scale historical epics such as Mughal-e-Azam and Baahubali are not counted as war dramas. With them, Border 2 would have had an even tougher time to compete because both the movies sold above 10 crore tickets in India.
