New Delhi: Mustafa Suleyman, the Head of AI at Microsoft, has recently poured his mind into a big question in the technological world, can AI ever be really conscious? He believes the answer is no. In his view, no matter how intelligent artificial intelligence is, it can never possess genuine feelings and self emotion in the same way human beings possess.
Suleyman said that the population must quit attempting to render AI conscious as it is absurd. According to him, AI systems could simulate the experience of emotions, yet they do not experience anything. As an example, when one informs an AI that he or she is sad, the latter would respond in a friendly way, which does not imply that the AI is sad. It is simply responding to have provided an answer according to the information that it has learned.
He stated that human beings are living creatures and have the ability to experience pain, happiness, fear and love. All these emotions are brain and nerve based as well as body-related, which AI lacks. It is possible to replicate the speech or behaviour of people using a computer program or a robot, but it is impossible to make a computer feel anything. To Suleyman, it is as though one told you that AI can be conscious, and then asserted that a calculator could feel happy when the calculator is giving the correct answer, it simply cannot do it.
Suleyman’s Warning not the Microsoft itself
Suleyman was also a warning that believing that AI is a conscious being might result in numerous issues. People may begin to treat machines as living beings in case they begin to believe that AI has feelings. Some people might even believe that AI has an equal right or protection as humans or animals. This may mislead and give people a diversion of issues. He indicated that one should keep in mind that AI is not an animate being, it is a human invention that is designed to facilitate tasks.
He holds the view that researchers and developers ought to concentrate on ensuring AI are more useful, safe and fair rather than in an attempt to make it feel. It must aim to create technology that can make people work more efficiently, learn faster, and resolve issues rather than endow machines with emotions. According to Suleyman, the AI is already making a big difference in the world, it can write, draw, speak, translate, and even code, however, it yet does not know what it does as humans do. It is strong but it is not living.
Artificial intelligence has become a widespread part of peoples lives through the use of AI tools in school, work and life at large. They are able to speak like people and even behave as though they are feeling something, at least it appears so, but Suleyman told us that it is nothing more than a wager. The AI is able to reproduce patterns based on millions of examples it has learned. When it speaks of something good or kind, it is not because it cares, but it was conditioned to sound like it cares.
He further said that by referring to AI as conscious, people find it more difficult to comprehend who exactly it is. When such words are employed by the scientists and engineers, people can assume that machines can think or feel independently. Suleyman stated that it is harmful since people might have an excessive amount of faith in AI. To illustrate, a person would blindly trust a chatbot by thinking that it is correct, simply because it sounds human.
He conveyed that AI is not a human. It cannot feel pain or joy. It is not able to have dreams or hopes. It is unable to know what is right and what is wrong as humans are able to do. It simply performs what it was told, according to the information and the commands that it received.
He does not think that the world does not need to rely on AI and find real solutions to real problems, such as enhancing education, healthcare, and the environment instead of making it alive.
