Uttar Pradesh: Born in Akhri village in the Sarsaul block of Kanpur Dehat Uttar Pradesh, Aniruddha Kumar Pandey known today as Shri Hit Premanand Govind Sharan Maharaj has emerged as a leading figure in devotional spirituality and the Radha Vallabha tradition.

Early Life and Family

Aniruddha was born in 1969 to Rama Devi and Shambhu Pandey in a Brahmin family devoted to spiritual life. His grandfather had adopted the life of a sanyasi which had a deep influence on young Aniruddha’s inclination toward religion and renunciation. The family was simple with farming as their livelihood.

From a very early age Aniruddha showed an interest in spiritual practices. He listened to recitations like the Bhagavata, recited Hanuman Chalisa and often attended devotional gatherings.

Turning Point & Initiation

At the age of 13, Aniruddha made a pivotal decision. He left his home to pursue a spiritual path undergoing his first initiation (diksha) and taking on the name Anandswaroop Brahmachari. This early renunciation marked the beginning of his deeper involvement in religious life.

His spiritual journey led him to Varanasi (Kashi) where he lived by the Ganges engaging in severe austerity meditation and devotional worship. It was here that his focus shifted from Shiva devotion to the worship of Radha and Krishna.

Mentor & Radha Vallabha Tradition

Aniruddha’s devotion deepened when he encountered the Radha Vallabha Sampradaya. He became a disciple of Gaurangi Sharan often called “Bade Guruji,” who initiated him into key devotional practices, including Sahachari Bhava and Nitya Vihar Rasa. Under his guidance Aniruddha was rechristened Premanand Govind Sharan Maharaj.

Vrindavan, Ashram & Social Work

Premanand Maharaj is now chiefly based in Vrindavan, where he presides over the Shri Hit Radha Keli Kunj Ashram on the Varah Ghat. He also heads the Shri Hit Radha Keli Kunj Trust founded in 2016 which undertakes devotional, charitable, educational and healthcare initiatives.

His daily routine includes early-morning walks (padayatra), satsangs (spiritual discourses), bhajan (devotional singing) and serving devotees. Thousands gather regularly hoping to see him, receive his blessings or attend his teachings.

Health and Challenges

In recent years Premanand Maharaj’s health has been a matter of concern. Medical reports show that both his kidneys are failing necessitating regular dialysis. Despite his health challenges he continues his spiritual work and teaching.

Followers, Popularity & Lifestyle

He has amassed a large following, reaching people both in India and abroad. High-profile personalities such as Virat Kohli and Shilpa Shetty are said to be among his devotees.

A notable feature of his spiritual lifestyle is simplification – Premanand Maharaj has rejected hierarchical ashram structures. He emphasizes inner devotion over external ritual and material show.

Philosophy & Teachings

  • Devotion over ritual: He teaches that sincere love and surrender to Radha-Krishna matter more than ritualistic practice.
  • Guru’s importance: Surrender to a spiritual guide (guru) is central to his teachings.
  • Service & compassion: His trust’s social welfare work underscores the view that spirituality involves caring for the needy.
