Box Office Showdown

The latest entry in the Godzilla franchise, Godzilla Minus Zero, has made a significant impact at the box office, earning an impressive $14.5 million on its opening day, including Thursday previews. The film is projected to reach a remarkable $32 million by the end of its opening weekend, marking it as a historic debut for a live-action foreign-language film.

Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, Godzilla Minus Zero is a sequel to the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One, which debuted in December 2023. The new film, which features a budget in the mid-teens, explores postwar Japan facing threats from the three-headed Ghidorah and the potential return of Godzilla. It has received an A CinemaScore from audiences and boasts a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

In contrast, The Cat in the Hat, an animated adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ classic, opened with $6 million from 4,003 theatres. Despite its $92 million budget, the film is expected to earn around $18 million for its opening weekend, falling short of initial projections of $20 million. Critics have been lukewarm, with a 45% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Other New Releases

Alongside these two major releases, several other films debuted this weekend. Ramayana: Rise of a Legend, which focuses on the life of Prince Rama, grossed approximately $2.4 million on Friday and is projected to reach $7.3 million over the weekend. The film has garnered a 76% score from critics.

Another notable release is Wild Horse Nine, which opened with around $2.4 million and is expected to earn about $5.5 million. This comedic thriller features a strong cast, including John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell, and has received a 94% approval rating from critics.

As the box office landscape continues to evolve, Godzilla Minus Zero has firmly established itself as the frontrunner, setting the stage for a competitive holiday season.
