Mumbai: Filmmaker Rohit Shetty, best known for his larger-than-life action entertainers and hit comedy franchises, is all set to surprise audiences with his next project with John Abraham. Stepping away from his usual high-octane masala zone, the director is making a gritty action film inspired by the life of renowned police officer Rakesh Maria. Meanwhile, Rohit has made sure that the movie still has a solid commercial aspect to it that will appeal to the masses.

As the film nears the completion of its shoot, the title, which was kept under wraps so far, has now reportedly been finalised.

Maria IPS Title Almost Locked

According to sources, the John Abraham starrer is most likely to be titled Maria IPS. The core team, including Rohit Shetty and John Abraham, reportedly felt that the title fits perfectly with the subject of the film. The title is a direct reflection of the character, yet it is also impactful and commercial because the story is based on the life of Rakesh Maria, one of the most respected police officers in India.

The makers are said to have explored other title options as well. However, Maria IPS has emerged as the strongest choice. An ultimate decision is anticipated in a month, and then the official title and perhaps release date will be announced.

A New Side of Rohit Shetty and John Abraham

The team behind Maria IPS is said to be extremely confident about the way the film has turned out. Rohit Shetty is reportedly presenting a new style of commercial filmmaking that audiences have not seen from him before. The movie is a mix of realism and scale that possess a grounded but lively action drama.

John Abraham, who plays the central role, has delivered a performance that insiders describe as intense and impactful. Known for his strong screen presence, the actor is expected to shine in this serious and demanding role.

A major portion of the film has been shot at real locations across South and Central Mumbai, adding authenticity to the narrative. In July and August 2025, the team filmed extensively at Ellora Studios near Mumbai, where a detailed police station set was created. In this two weeks plan, some of the most important scenes were filmed and these included dramatic scenes at the police stations, police brutal interrogation scenes.

After Maria IPS finishes with full swing, Rohit Shetty will proceed to his next project, the long-awaited comedy Golmaal 5, which will start shooting in February.
