Johannesburg, November 23: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday highlighted climate change and disaster preparedness as critical global priorities during the second session of the G-20 summit in South Africa, urging world leaders to strengthen international cooperation to tackle these challenges.
Focus on Resilience and Energy Transition
Speaking at the session held in Johannesburg, PM Modi emphasized the need to build a resilient world capable of confronting disasters and climate change while ensuring a smooth energy transition. According to information shared on his official X handle, he stressed that these efforts must be accompanied by robust food security plans.
India is actively working on all these fronts, building a future that is human-centric and inclusive,” the Prime Minister stated.
India’s Leadership on Disaster Risk Reduction
PM Modi reminded G-20 leaders that India had established the Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group during its 2023 presidency of the organization. He commended South Africa for prioritizing this issue during its current presidency.
Natural disasters remain a major challenge for humanity. Global cooperation is essential to address them effectively,” he said.
Space Technology for Humanity
In a forward-looking proposal, the Prime Minister suggested that the time has come for space technology to serve humanity. He formally proposed the creation of a G-20 Open Satellite Data Partnership, aimed at leveraging space-based data for disaster management and climate action.
Call for Climate Finance
PM Modi urged developed nations to provide timely and affordable financial support for climate action. He also appealed for the creation of a G-20 roadmap based on the Deccan Principles that were agreed upon in New Delhi during India’s presidency.
Bilateral Engagements
During his visit to Johannesburg, PM Modi held meetings with numerous world leaders. He shared several photographs on X documenting these interactions, including a meeting with World Trade Organization Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
