Delhi, 21 September (H.S.): Former Delhi cricket captain Mithun Manhas has become the leading candidate to take over as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The announcement follows a marathon meeting involving senior cricket administrators and power brokers in the capital on Saturday, just ahead of the nomination deadline on Sunday afternoon. The election will be held on September 28 during the board’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Manhas, who has played 157 first-class matches and represented IPL franchises like Delhi Capitals, Pune Warriors, and Chennai Super Kings, is poised to become the first uncapped player to head the BCCI. Over recent years, he has also contributed as an administrator with the Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA). His reputation as a stalwart of India’s domestic cricket and his administrative experience have earned him considerable backing.

Following the 2019 amendment to the BCCI constitution, the trend is for nominations to be unopposed, and the cricketing fraternity strongly supports the principle that a cricketer should lead the board. The last two presidents, Sourav Ganguly and Roger Binny, were former national players and respected administrators.

Alongside Manhas, former India left-arm spinner Raghuram Bhat, currently heading the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), is expected to gain a key position in the BCCI Apex Council, likely as treasurer or vice-president. There are ongoing discussions regarding the continuation of Rajeev Shukla as vice-president and Arun Dhumal as IPL chairman.

The selection of Mithun Manhas as the likely next BCCI president marks a significant moment in Indian cricket administration, reflecting a growing preference for leadership that combines cricketing experience with administrative acumen.
