Mumbai: Actor Tamannaah Bhatia has praised filmmaker Karan Johar for writing strong women and backing “outsiders,” adding that his nuanced understanding of female characters doesn’t always get due credit. The remarks came in a conversation with News18 Showsha, excerpts of which were widely picked up by entertainment portals.
In the interview, Bhatia called Johar “extremely warm and welcoming,” saying he “champions people who’re from the industry and those who aren’t.” She added, “Maybe Karan has an in-depth understanding of women, but he isn’t validated enough for that,” noting he has done this “for many, many years now.” (Quotes as carried by Pinkvilla from the News18 Showsha interaction.)
Other outlets echoed the thrust of her comments. The Times of India reported that Bhatia appreciates Johar for not stereotyping women and for supporting non-industry talent, aligning with her “outsiders” point. Bangalore Mirror carried a similar summary, underscoring her view that Johar has consistently defied dated portrayals of women.
A separate recap by NewsBytes also cited the News18 exchange and reiterated Bhatia’s praise for Johar’s inclusivity and emphasis on strong female parts context that lands amid recurring social debates on Bollywood “insiders vs outsiders.”
