Mumbai: After a powerful start to 2026 with Border 2, Sunny Deol is gearing up for a busy year with several exciting projects. The most anticipated of them all is the period drama Lahore 1947, which re-unites him with film director Rajkumar Santoshi and is produced by Aamir Khan. Now, only months before its debut, there is new noise that the producers may wish to give the film another title.

According to trade sources, the team feels that while Lahore 1947 captures the setting and timeline of the story, there could be a better title that reflects the emotional depth and narrative of the film. The makers are said to have narrowed down to some new choices and wants to hold another round of discussions before the final name is locked.

Why the makers want a new title

The film is adapted from the iconic play Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, written by Syed Asghar Wajahat in 1980. The story is set in the period of partition and recounts the journey of a Muslim family, who move out of Lucknow to Lahore at the time of Independence and are allotted a haveli that used to belong to a Hindu family. The plot also becomes emotional as the old Hindu mother denies the new family to move into her previous home and an unpleasant relationship arises between the old woman and the new family.

Given the layered emotions, human connections, and sensitive historical backdrop, the filmmakers now believe that a more evocative title could better represent the heart of the story rather than focusing only on the location and year.

Lahore 1947‘s Release date and star cast details

The makers have already announced that the movie will be released in the theater on August 13, which is a good time to utilize the Independence Day holiday week. The patriotic mood of the time is likely to provide the film with a great push at the box office with the release window.

Apart from Sunny Deol in the lead, the film features an impressive ensemble cast including Preity Zinta, Ali Fazal, and Shabana Azmi. Aamir Khan will also be seen in a supporting role, adding further weight to the project.

The film already has a huge buzz with a strong cast, renowned creative team, and a powerful story. It may or may not change its existing brand name, but this period drama is becoming one of the most anticipated releases in Bollywood in 2026.
